Haggling is a skill that has to be learnt, just like riding a bicycle. Sometimes I have to remind myself that unless I'm shopping at a supermarket where each item has a fixed price, every where else, EVERYTHING has to be haggled.

i was so excited to see that you'd updated. it sounds like you're having an amazing time. it's also making me reconsider the "authenticity" of my "african" experience.. but that's sort of something i thought about before hand too, asking myself what is "authentically" african, and obviously whatever i experienced was real, and thus, authentic. i just think i really had a sheltered experience from the student/tourist perspective, traveling to areas where tourism was prevalent and thus landscapes altered.. but everywhere i went felt like a combination of the global and the local, the third world and the first... it sounds like you're experience some of that too, and it makes me realize how much i want to experience things from the activist/ngo perspective as well. i'm so proud of you and can't wait to hear more about your time there. love you!
p.s. i'm going to try and skype you soon, when it's not 5am there. i have leftover funds from before, and have figured out that you're 8 hours ahead of us californians. nigeria's country code is 234. these webpages might also be useful to pass on to anyone who might want to call you. i think skype is definitely the cheapest, however.

Sounds like the adventure is moving along at lightning speed. I love reading your blog!! It is great that you will be able to really immerse yourself in the local culture. I have to admit I do have some anxiety as I worry about my son on the other side of the globe in a third-world country. Please do not underestimate the importance of your own personal safety. The work you and your group are doing is going to make a real difference in people's lives.

Be Safe!! I am very proud of you.

i keep on thinking "scott's in nigeria now." i'm so excited for you, and i can't wait to hear how it is.
p.s. about packing too much- if you did, you only had to endure the embarrassment of getting it there, and now that that's over you can just give most of it away before you come back home!

Oh my god. I'm packing tonight and I feel exactly the same way. No matter how hard I try I know I'm not going to be perfectly prepared for everything. All I can do is think of the snow leopard...
